Coptis aspleniifolia, or fernleaf goldthread, is a low-growing plant that flourishes in undisturbed forests, providing groundcover and also food for deer. Its flower is nothing to crow about, a delicate pale green shoot; its attractive dark-green shiny leaves divided into five or more segments, looking delicate as a fern, are the main attraction. "Goldthread" refers to the vibrant yellow hue of the roots.
