Western Sword Fern
The ubiquitous Western sword fern, Polystichum munitum is a garden work horse. Normally found in shade to dappled shade in Northwest low altitude forests, it can also thrive in full sun with adequate water. Western sword fern is evergreen with long glossy fronds arching from a woody base, usually about 4 feet tall and wide. It makes a beautiful addition to both the garden and natural woodland sites and can be used on slopes for erosion control. Cut it back in March to maintain a tidy appearance.
Native people roasted, peeled and ate the sword fern's
rhizomes, steamed the tender young sprouts and chewed
the young leaves to treat sore throats and coughs.
Its versatility allows us to plant sword fern throughout the
Buck Lake Native Plant Garden.
